Our namesake #Maewest cast African American actor Lorenzo Tucker as her leading man & lover, during a time when police raided & arrested artists for “controversial” or “morally corrupt” work. Tucker and Ms. West’s play did get raided & shut down but they remained friends for life.
Lorenzo Tucker (June 27, 1907 – August 19, 1986), known as the “Black Valentino,” was an African-American stage and screen actor who played the romantic lead in the early black films of Oscar Micheaux. Tucker was also a successful stage actor, appearing on Broadway in The Constant Sinner, by writer, producer-actress Mae West.
